Lake Baikal Under Environmental Threat Due to Mining

Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world and it is also one of the most endangered. Mining companies are lobbying to be given the rights to harvest mineral resources of the lake environment. It's a tacky situation with both economic progress and environmental protection on the discussion table.

Apart from mining companies, there's also plans to construct a uranium enrichment facility beside the lake. Environmentalist Marina Rikhvanova has campaigned against it believing it is a potential threat to the lake environment, posing a future danger for both people and wildlife.

Lake Baikal is also known as the world's oldest lake and has been dubbed the Pearl of Siberia (although it's really shaped like a long sword). Speaking of pearls, scientists have long observed strange circular formations on the ice of the lake that measure kilometers across. The explanation for these geologic features may be viewed here.

How Feeding Cockroaches to Pet Lizards Can Lead to Environmental Disaster

Every pet owner has a responsibility to feed his pet no matter what kind it is. Dogs are fed dog food, cats are fed cat food. These are typically processed already and come in plastic bags, cans, or boxes. "Eat's" easy to feed common pets like these. But for pet lizard owners, it's a different story.

Food for lizards are not sourced readily from grocery stores. They are bought from pet shops which get their supplies as "fresh meat" imported from other countries. For some reason, both lizard and pet shop owners prefer to get this meat in the form of exotic cockroaches that aren't native to their destination.

Scientists fear that some of these roaches may escape, proliferate, and cause an environmental, ecological imbalance. Without the typical predators that eat them, their numbers can grow to unmanageable proportions the likes of which you see only in a movie that could be titled "Roaches." Even without the help of petshops, cockroaches like the Turkestan roach have already entered Florida by hitch hiking along with soldiers coming back from the Middle East.

Chris Massey of Zoey 101 on Saving the Planet

Who would not want to save planet Earth from environmental degradation? Well, there are the villains we watch in late night movies who are almost always out to destroy the world, conquer it, or suck it dry of resources at the expense of the human race. Well, that's television fiction.

Here is a bit of television fact as funny actor Kyle Massey, star of Corey in the House, interviews his brother from Zoey 101. What's the outcome?
